SCOPE:
The CAD Designer is responsible for creating, modifying, and maintaining 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, labels, and related product documentation in support of new product development and manufacturing operations. Working closely with New Product Development and Manufacturing Engineers, this role supports the full product lifecycle, including concept development, engineering changes, production releases, and continuous improvement activities. The position utilizes SolidWorks for CAD design and drawing creation, AutoCAD for legacy drawing updates and SolidWorks PDM for document and drawing management, ensuring all engineering documentation is accurate, controlled, and compliant with company procedures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Create, revise, and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Revise and maintain legacy 2D detailed engineering drawings using AutoCAD.
- Develop and modify product labels, label drawings, and associated documentation to support new and existing products.
- Generate manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and supporting technical documentation from sketches, engineering concepts, and verbal direction.
- Maintain engineering documentation within SolidWorks PDM, ensuring proper revision control and document integrity.
- Support New Product Development activities by creating design concepts, prototype documentation, and production-ready drawing packages.
- Process and implement engineering changes through established quality and regulatory systems.
- Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and product structures within engineering systems.
- Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable, serviceable, and compliant with production requirements.
- Collaborate with Purchasing, Quality, Product Service, suppliers, and manufacturing personnel to resolve design and documentation issues.
- Interface with vendors to obtain technical information, component specifications, quotations, and prototype parts as required.
- Prepare and manage complete engineering documentation packages for product releases, design changes, and manufacturing support activities.
- Perform basic tolerance stack-up analyses and support engineering evaluations related to fit, form, and function.
- Maintain part libraries, design standards, templates, and engineering databases.
- Ensure all drawings and documentation comply with company standards, drafting practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintain proficiency in current CAD technologies, drafting standards, and product development practices.
- Support cross-functional projects and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling, assembly creation, and detailed drawing development.
- Experience in AutoCAD 2D drawing development.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM or comparable document management systems.
- SolidWorks certification preferred.
- Experience creating and maintaining engineering drawings, assembly documentation, and Bills of Materials.
- Familiarity with engineering change management and document control processes.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacturing principles.
- Ability to interpret engineering specifications, sketches, and technical requirements.
- Basic knowledge of GD&T and ANSI Y14.5 standards.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and electromechanical components and assemblies.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate and controlled documentation.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Knowledge of quality systems, GMP requirements, and ISO 13485 requirements preferred.
- Basic understanding of engineering mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate Degree in Drafting, CAD Technology, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field preferred.
- 3 to 5 years of experience creating and maintaining 3D CAD models and engineering drawings in a manufacturing environment preferred.
