Position Summary
The Pre-Engineering Intern is an entry-level, hands-on technical role supporting the digitization and reverse engineering of dental products. This internship provides practical experience assisting with industrial CT scanning equipment, processing scan data, and generating STL files used by engineering and manufacturing teams. The role supports design analysis, legacy product recreation, and manufacturing investigations under defined procedures and supervision.
This position directly supports product quality and engineering effectiveness while providing foundational learning in engineering processes and technologies.
The program concludes with a final presentation to senior leadership, where interns share their findings, learning outcomes, and career insights. Interns will also participate in development sessions focused on personal and professional growth.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with setup and operation of industrial CT (X-ray) scanning systems to capture 3D data of dental products and components.
- Prepare parts for scanning, including fixturing, positioning, and basic inspection prior to scanning.
- Execute CT scans using established work instructions, scan recipes, and safety procedures under supervision.
- Perform basic scan data processing and segmentation to support creation of STL files.
- Generate and organize STL outputs used for reverse engineering, evaluation, and documentation.
- Perform visual checks of STL files and scan results to ensure completeness and usability.
- Accurately document scan details, filenames, and processing steps per quality requirements.
- Maintain workspace organization, cleanliness, and equipment care in compliance with site standards.
- Follow all radiological safety, health, and environmental procedures.
- Communicate issues, anomalies, or equipment concerns to supervising technicians or engineers.
- Participate in learning opportunities related to engineering, quality, and manufacturing processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of engineering, quality, or manufacturing teams.
Education & Experience
Required
- High School Diploma or GED and either:
- Enrolled to begin a university engineering program in the upcoming fall term, or
- Currently completing the first year of an undergraduate engineering degree
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must be 18 years of age or older
Preferred
- Technical coursework, vocational training, or certifications related to manufacturing, inspection, metrology, CAD, or imaging
- Prior experience working in a manufacturing, lab, or technical support environment
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to follow detailed work instructions and standard operating procedures
- Basic computer skills and ability to navigate file systems and technical software with training
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to work with precision data
- Mechanical aptitude and comfort handling small or detailed components
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow safety-critical instructions
- Willingness to learn CT scanning technology, STL data preparation, and reverse engineering fundamentals
- Strong interest in developing engineering and technical skills in a hands-on environment
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to stand, sit, or move between workstations for extended periods
- Ability to handle small parts and use computers and technical equipment
- Work performed in a lab or manufacturing-support environment with industrial scanning equipment
- Ability to regularly commute to the manufacturing facility and work up to 30 hours per week
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
