Maintenance Mechanic I - Sarasota, FL

We are looking for an experienced and talented Maintenance Mechanic to join our team. This individual will support the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, setup, and continuous improvement of automated manufacturing equipment and precision machining operations. This role ensures equipment reliability, maintains production output and quality standards, performs machine adjustments and preventive maintenance, and supports production through strong technical expertise and problem-solving.

The Maintenance Mechanic supports manufacturing technologies including Automatrix assembly equipment, Swiss-type CNC screw machines, laser marking systems and related secondary processing equipment. The role is key to reducing downtime, improving machine performance, maintaining product quality, and ensuring safe and efficient operations.

This position also includes downtime tracking, equipment performance analysis, preventive maintenance execution, precision inspection, documentation, and participation in continuous improvement initiatives.

Equipment Operation, Maintenance & Adjustments

• Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and adjust automated manufacturing equipment, including Automatrix systems and Swiss-type CNC screw machines.
• Perform machine setups, changeovers, tooling changes, material loading, and process verification activities.
• Monitor machine performance and make real-time adjustments to maintain product quality and production efficiency.
• Replace worn or damaged components, including belts, bearings, gears, rollers, sensors, tooling, and pneumatic devices.
• Support equipment startup, shutdown, qualification, and validation activities as required.

Swiss Screw Machine Operations

• Operate Swiss-type CNC screw machines and associated support equipment.
• Perform tooling changes, tool offset adjustments, and machine setup verification within authorized procedures.
• Monitor tool wear and machine performance to maintain dimensional accuracy and process stability.
• Load raw materials and maintain material flow to support uninterrupted production.
• Support laser marking and secondary processing operations as required.

Preventive Maintenance

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities in accordance with maintenance plans and equipment manuals.
• Conduct machine inspections, lubrication, cleaning, calibration checks, and replacement of consumable components.
• Identify potential equipment failures and recommend corrective actions before breakdowns occur.
• Maintain accurate preventive maintenance records and complete assigned activities on schedule.

Troubleshooting & Repairs

• Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical equipment issues.
• Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and production interruptions to minimize delays.
• Use drawings, manuals, maintenance documentation, and diagnostic tools to determine root causes.
• Collaborate with Production, Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality to implement sustainable corrective actions.

Quality Assurance & Inspection

• Perform in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, optical inspection equipment, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Verify parts meet engineering drawings, specifications, and applicable quality requirements.
• Identify, report, and segregate nonconforming material and support corrective action activities.
• Maintain product quality standards while minimizing scrap and rework.

Downtime Tracking & Reporting

• Accurately document downtime events, repairs, machine adjustments, parts replacements, and maintenance activities.
• Enter downtime data into Power BI or other approved reporting systems.
• Assist in analyzing equipment downtime trends and reliability issues.
• Support corrective actions that improve equipment uptime and operational performance.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

• Work closely with operators, supervisors, engineers, maintenance personnel, and Quality to identify and resolve equipment issues.
• Communicate machine status, maintenance requirements, adjustments, and process concerns effectively.
• Assist with operator training related to equipment operation, basic troubleshooting, and routine care.
• Participate in root cause analysis, Kaizen events, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Recommend equipment modifications, upgrades, and process improvements that enhance safety, quality, performance, or reliability.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow company safety procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Adhere to Lockout/Tagout, machine guarding, PPE, and other required safety protocols.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area using 5S principles.
• Support FDA, ISO, GMP, and company quality system requirements, where applicable.
• Perform addition responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent combination of work experience and education required; vocational training in mechanical maintenance, industrial technology, or a related field preferred.

Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience maintaining, adjusting, and troubleshooting automated machinery, ideally with experience working on Automatrix or similar equipment.

Technical Expertise: 

• • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of machine systems, gear drives, motors, sensors, pneumatics, and automated equipment.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, work instructions, equipment manuals, and specifications.
  • Understanding of precision machining principles, dimensional inspection, and CNC machining operations.
  • Familiarity with entering downtime and maintenance data into Power BI or similar reporting systems.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills.

Problem-Solving Ability: Ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues and implement effective solutions to keep machines running efficiently.

Attention to Detail: High attention to detail when making machine adjustments and performing maintenance to ensure parts meet production standards.

Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and report downtime accurately.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy components, work in confined spaces, and perform physical tasks that require manual dexterity and stamina.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Automatrix Machines: Prior experience with Automatrix machines or similar automated production equipment is highly preferred.
• Other Machine Experience: Experience operating Citizen, Star, Tsugami, or similar Swiss-type CNC screw machines.
• Certifications: Any relevant certifications in machinery maintenance, industrial maintenance, CNC machining, Precision Manufacturing are a plus.
• Knowledge of Electrical Systems: Basic understanding of electrical systems and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) is a plus but not required.
• Lean: Lean Manufacturing, total Productive Maintenance, or Continuous Improvement Experience.
• Other:  Knowledge of blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing concepts.

Working Conditions:

• Fast-paced, high-pressure manufacturing environment.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and perform repetitive motion for extended periods.

• Manual dexterity required for precision machine adjustments, inspection, and handling of small components.
• Work is performed in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with automated machinery and precision machining equipment.
• Potential exposure to machine noise, lubricants, coolants, and production materials.
• Use of required PPE in designated manufacturing and maintenance areas.
• Occasional overtime may be required to support production schedules, planned maintenance, or equipment breakdowns.

MFG Work Environment:

May be required to wear PPE when performing certain tasks. Work is generally performed in a warehouse and manufacturing environment.  The noise level is usually moderate. Limited temperature fluctuations. Site specific requirements may apply.
