Electrical Engineer
This role is responsible for supporting the Site Engineering Team, which is responsible for daily plant support, new product development/scale-up, and the continuous improvement of processes that manufacture various Dentsply Sirona products. This role will work with a cross-functional team, including electricians/e-techs on the Site Maintenance Team, to provide electrical, instrumentation and machine control systems support for all production equipment across both Milford manufacturing sites. This role must be able to work unsupervised and be able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical / electronic, electro-mechanical components, and motor and automation control systems (hardware and software). The Electrical Engineer applies the highest level of skill in determining plant equipment and machinery malfunctions and restoring equipment to normal operation. The Electrical engineer will also be heavily involved in troubleshooting control system malfunctions (i.e. – PLC, PC based, AC & DC Drives, servo controls, stepper motors, HMI’s, Robotics, controls networks) and electrical / electronic problems on automated equipment using appropriate test equipment and documentation / diagrams. This role must be able to work on panel building, panel installation and wiring installation for new machine or existing machine upgrades.
This role will also coordinate and oversee the design, build and maintenance of all machine electrical and control systems. This includes establishing electrical hardware and software control standards, the development and implementation of machine programming and electrical training programs, the maintenance of machine program backup systems, and overall accountability for compliance with applicable regulations relative to NEC electrical codes.
- Follow all site environmental, health, safety, quality and regulatory guidelines and maintain compliance with OSHA, FDA, cGMP, ISO and NEC regulations.
- Design and/or coordinate the design of, electrical and control systems for automated, semi-automated and manually operated production equipment, including motion control, vision systems, robotics and SCADA.
- Direct and supervise the building, rebuilding, troubleshooting and repair of electrical and control systems, panel installations, and electrical/control cable installation including conduit/wires/termination and assemblies for all production equipment.
- Display thorough knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC’s and associated software including HMI and visualization software for Allen Bradley and another make of HMI.
- Define and document electrical control system requirements for equipment design to meet all expectations including safety, quality, delivery, inventory and cost.
- Design electrical and control systems for new plant equipment or modification of existing equipment taking into consideration cost, level of technology, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.
- Develop and conduct electrical control system training programs for technicians and maintenance mechanics.
- Work closely with cross-functional project teams to develop electrical and control system process requirements ensuring equipment is designed to provide expected product volumes, quality, and performance.
- Prepare and/or direct the preparation of electrical and control system layouts, detailed drawings, and schematics (using SolidWorks or AutoCAD). Ensure that all designs, whether designed in-house or by a contractor, are adequately documented and documentation is available for maintenance, redesign, and training.
- Develop and maintain a program designed to insure accurate and current documentation of machine code and electrical schematics (for PLC/HMI/Drive systems).
- Troubleshoot electrical and control system malfunctions on production machines and plant equipment resulting in recommendations for corrections and/or modifications.
- Participate in TPM event for electrical/control system maintenance.
- Identify and work closely with perspective equipment manufacturers to ensure effective communication of electrical and control system requirements, specifications, and contractual obligations while obtaining quotations to build and install equipment.

Education:
- Electrical Engineering BS degree with emphasis on E&I Controls and Instrumentation systems or equivalent degree preferred and a minimum of five (5) years electrical control system engineering experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably a medical device or pharmaceutical environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be able to prepare manufacturing procedures for new machine/process/product implementation. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common, scientific, and technical journals, financial reports, contracts, and legal documents. The ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies. The ability to read, and interpret drawings, specifications, safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of plain and solid geometry, and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, metric measurement, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distributions, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
Other Skills:
- Must possess a hands-on working style with involvement in all phases of projects. Good inter-personal skills to tactfully resolve and implement changes as they occur. Must be able to visualize objects. Be computer literate with working knowledge of AutoCAD, MS project (or other project software), Excel, MS Word, or other word processing software, and any other related engineering software.
